Lot 388 A Japanese Satsuma Style Earthenware Incense Burner and Cover (Koro), Meiji Period

A Japanese Satsuma style earthenware incense burner and cover, known as a koro, dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). The globular body is decorated with panels depicting scholar figures or immortals in a garden setting, rendered in underglaze blue, overglaze iron-red enamel, and highlighted with gilding. The vessel features two moulded shishi (lion-dog) handles and stands on matching tripod shishi feet. The domed cover is surmounted by a moulded shishi finial. The cream-coloured ground exhibits a fine-textured crackle glaze characteristic of Satsuma type earthenware produced for the export market. No maker’s marks are visible.
