A figural earthenware vessel modelled in the form of a fish, designed to stand vertically on its tail. The exterior is finished in a thick, textured lava-style glaze with a mottled palette of deep purple and maroon. The fins and tail are highlighted with a mustard-yellow ochre glaze and feature incised linear details to suggest texture. The eyes are moulded and accented with a pale-coloured glaze. The interior is glazed. The base features an illegible stamped maker’s mark in dark pigment. The form and heavy glazing are characteristic of mid-20th-century studio pottery, specifically the gluggle jugs produced by Fosters Pottery of Cornwall.
