A Royal Doulton earthenware character jug titled Sancho Pança, model number D6456. The jug depicts the companion to Don Quixote, featuring a detailed face with a grey moustache and beard, wearing a black hat. The handle is modelled in the form of a donkey’s head. The piece is finished in hand-painted polychrome glazes with a high-gloss finish. The base features a comprehensive set of marks, including the Royal Doulton circular mark with a lion atop a crown, the title Sancho Pança (Servant to Don Quixote), the model number D. 6456, and a copyright date of 1956. Additional marks on the base include Doulton & Co Limited and four registration numbers: Rd No 881510, Rd No 35706, Rd No 7561, and Rd No 332/56. A small red handwritten character, likely a decorator’s mark, is also present. This model was designed by Geoff Blower and introduced in 1957.
