A large Royal Doulton character jug depicting Sir John Falstaff, the famous Shakespearean character. This glazed earthenware vessel is modelled in the form of a bust with hand-painted polychrome decoration under a high-gloss glaze. The figure is portrayed with a jovial expression, a ruddy complexion, and a grey beard. He is wearing a black Tudor-style cap and a red garment. The handle is modelled in the form of a large feather or plume. The base features a printed black backstamp including a lion standing atop a crown, “ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND”, “MADE IN ENGLAND”, the name “Falstaff”, model number “D 6 2 8 7”, copyright “COPR 1949”, and “DOULTON & CO LIMITED”.
