A Chinese hand-carved soapstone (steatite) figural group, The piece is worked from multi-toned stone exhibiting natural shades of cream, tan, and dark grey-black. The composition depicts an elephant with its trunk raised towards a central globular hollowed vessel, accompanied by a smaller deer looking upwards. The figures are supported by a base of pierced openwork rockery. A red circular medallion held by the elephant contains an incised character representing the Shou (longevity) symbol. The decoration is further defined by incised detailing and applied painted accents in red and black.
