Lot 353 A 20th-century Chinese Canton Famille Rose Medallion porcelain plate

A 20th-century Chinese porcelain plate of circular form, decorated in the Canton Rose Medallion style using a Famille Rose palette. The central medallion is hand-painted with a traditional domestic scene featuring multiple figures in robes and children within a garden setting. This central composition is framed by an elaborate gilded border decorated with scrolling green foliage and multi-coloured blossoms. The border is further detailed with four white-ground reserve panels, each containing a floral spray. The underside of the plate bears a four-character mark in iron-red enamel within a square border, transcribing as Qianlong Nian Zhi, which translates to Made in the reign of Qianlong. A faint circular factory stamp containing the number 14 is also present on the reverse. While bearing a mark referencing the Qianlong reign 1736-1795, the style of the enamels, the specific application of the gilding, and the presence of the stamped production number indicate that this is an apocryphal mark. The item is of mid-to-late 20th-century manufacture, produced for the export market.
