A Victorian writing slope of rectangular form with a domed lid, featuring a highly figured walnut exterior. The piece is adorned with a shaped brass escutcheon and a matching brass presentation plaque inset into the lid. The plaque is engraved with the text: PRESENTED TO A. G. Barkley BY THE TEACHERS & SCHOLARS OF ST SIMON’S SCHOOL LEEDS DEC. 22nd 1871. The interior opens to reveal a blue velvet-lined folding writing surface and a fitted upper compartment containing a curved pen rest and a single glass inkwell with a brass cap. The box is fitted with brass hinges and a lock plate.
