A Japanese decorative ceramic vase dating from the Meiji period (1868-1912). The vessel is constructed from white ceramic, which is visible at the points of damage, and is finished with a vermilion-red ground. The exterior is decorated with raised black and gilt-tone motifs in a style characteristic of lacquer-decorated export porcelain. The primary decorative panel features a bird of prey perched upon a gnarled pine branch, set within a shaped lobed cartouche. The lower section of the vase is decorated with a pattern of vertical stripes, while the shoulder area incorporates scalloped and foliate borders. No maker marks are visible on the exterior of the piece.
