A vintage GEC (General Electric Company Ltd., England) Model BC5442 tabletop valve radio, dating from the late 1940s to early 1950s. The unit is housed in a dark brown Bakelite cabinet featuring a distinctive asymmetrical design. The left portion of the front panel consists of a large speaker grille with horizontal slats, while the right side features a vertical tuning dial. Four ribbed control knobs are positioned along the lower front edge for operation. The glass tuning dial is divided into three wavebands: Short Wave, Medium Wave, and Long Wave. It lists various international locations and numerous UK regional services including London, Midland, Welsh, and Scottish programmes. The manufacturer’s stylized GEC logo is visible in both the top left and top right corners of the dial glass, with a matching logo embossed into a square panel on the lower-left corner of the cabinet.
