Lot 413 A British War Medal 1939-1945

A British War Medal 1939-1945, struck in cupro-nickel. The reverse side features a triumphant lion standing over a fallen two-headed dragon, representing the Axis powers. The dates 1939 and 1945 are inscribed in two lines to the left of the central figure. The designer’s initials ECRP, for Edward Carter Preston, are incised near the bottom rim below the dragon’s tail. The medal is fitted with a fixed-bar suspension. It is unnamed, which is the standard issue format for British personnel for this campaign medal. The War Medal 1939-1945 was awarded to all full-time personnel of the Armed Forces and Merchant Navy for serving at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.
