A Russian Orthodox icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, dating to the late 19th century. The piece consists of a painted wooden panel overlaid with a chased and repoussé brass oklad, also known as a riza. Christ is depicted half-length, his right hand raised in a gesture of benediction and his left hand holding an open book of Gospels. The pages of the book are inscribed with small Cyrillic characters, typically representing liturgical text. The face and hands are executed in paint on the wooden panel, visible through apertures in the metal cover, and are rendered in a late traditional style. The oklad features a prominent rayed nimbus and an ornate foliate border. The reverse of the wooden panel is covered with a coarse, light-coloured textile backing. No hallmarks or maker’s marks are visible on the metalwork or the panel.
