Description
A decorative fireplace mantel and surround executed in the Rococo Revival style. The piece is constructed from cast plaster or composite material with a white-painted finish. The serpentine lintel is centred with a prominent shell-form rocaille crest, which is flanked by high-relief floral swags and scrolling acanthus foliage. The curved jambs feature matching scrolled and floral decoration, leading down to block bases. The set includes a fitted decorative interior panel with low-relief scrolling foliate borders and a central rectangular section. A modern-style ventilation grille is set into the lower portion of the central panel, suggesting use as a decorative cover for a decommissioned fireplace or an electrical heating unit.
