Description

A 20th-century low cabinet or commode in the French Provincial revival style, attributed to Bernhardt. The piece is constructed from oak with a medium brown finish and prominent grain. It features an inset, rectangular variegated rouge marble top with white and grey veining, set into a moulded oak border. The front is configured with a central pair of cupboard doors, each featuring a raised moulded panel accented with an inner gilt-metal fillet and fitted with twin cast brass handles. The central cupboard is flanked by curved side panels, each with a decorative cast brass ormolu-style scroll mount at the upper corner. Visible external hinges on the side panels indicate that these curved sections open to provide additional storage. The cabinet is raised on a shaped plinth base terminating in scroll-carved bracket feet. This is a single-piece cabinet with a removable marble top. The design is consistent with the Italian Neoclassical and Tuscan style furniture lines produced by manufacturers such as Bernhardt and Thomasville.
