Description

A small earthenware figural bud vase or spill vase, molded in the form of two upright fish joined together. The tail fins of the fish are positioned downwards to form a flared oval base. The vessel features heavy molded relief detail throughout the bodies of the fish. It is finished in a multi-coloured, mottled flambé-style glaze with tones of sang-de-boeuf red, deep purple, and ochre. The base area has incised vertical lines representing fin rays, finished with an orange-yellow glaze. The underside of the base shows several indistinct dark vertical marks and irregular brown splotches, but no clear factory marks, letters, or numbers are legible. The style and glaze are characteristic of late 19th to early 20th-century art pottery produced by various British or Continental European factories.
