Lot 405:
Description
A late Victorian sterling silver vesta case of rectangular form with rounded corners and a side-hinged lid. The exterior is decorated with an all-over engraved foliate design featuring ivy-like leaves. The front face features a central cartouche with an interlocking engraved monogram, surrounded by C-scroll borders. The decorative field is framed by a stippled or dotted border. The case retains its original suspension ring to the side. The item bears a clear set of British hallmarks on the inner lip including the maker mark H B & S for Herbert Bushell and Son, the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office, and the lowercase date letter t for 1893. While the item exhibits a yellowish surface tone in photographs, the hallmarks confirm the material as solid sterling silver.
