Description

This tabletop radio receiver features a moulded plastic cabinet, likely Bakelite or urea-formaldehyde, finished in a bright red gloss. The front of the unit is fitted with a cream-coloured lattice-work plastic speaker grille. Centred on the front is a horizontal black tuning dial protected by a clear cover, bearing the Philco brand name. The dial is marked for three tuning bands: S.W. (Short Wave), M.W. (Medium Wave), and L.W. (Long Wave). Numerous European and UK stations are listed on the dial face, including Athlone, Lyons, Naples, Hilversum, Sofia, Home, Paris, Light, Luxem’bg, Berlin, Moscow, Ankara, Lahti, and Kharkov. The presence of the BBC Home and Light programmes indicates this unit was produced for the United Kingdom market. The radio is operated by three front-mounted translucent plastic control knobs for volume, tuning, and band selection. Based on the design and dial configuration, this unit is attributed to the Philco Ariel series, such as the model A536B, dating from the late 1940s to early 1950s.
