Description

A Japanese porcelain vase of baluster form with a wide, flared neck, dating from the Meiji period. The vessel is decorated using the lacquered porcelain technique, featuring a black lacquer ground applied over a white porcelain body. The decorative scheme includes two large shaped cartouches: one containing a bird perched among flowering branches and the other depicting plum blossoms in bloom. These reserves are executed in polychrome pigments and gilt. The surrounding black ground is embellished with intricate gilt maki-e geometric diaper patterns and scrolling motifs. The base is marked with six hand-painted characters in iron-red, arranged in three vertical columns, reading Dai Nippon Hizen Shinbu-zo, identifying the maker as Shinbu of Hizen province.
