Description
This is a private-purchase leather traveller’s suitcase from the late Imperial German period. The item is constructed from heavy-gauge tan leather, featuring perimeter stitching and a robust grain. The lid is fitted with four stitched leather loops designed to accommodate mantel or greatcoat straps. It is equipped with a padded leather carrying handle secured by metal D-rings. The exterior lid is centrally marked with hand-painted initials G. W. B. in a Fraktur typeface, rendered in a dark pigment with a thin red border. The interior is lined with a dark, vertically-striped canvas fabric and contains a single leather security strap with a metal buckle. A small paper fragment, identified as a German Germania series postage stamp issued circa 1900-1922, remains adhered to the internal lining.
