Description
Two large-scale glazed ceramic character jugs produced by Royal Doulton. The first jug depicts the Shakespearean character Sir John Falstaff, featuring a grey beard and moustache, wearing a black hat and red doublet. The second jug depicts Sancho Pança, servant to Don Quixote, featuring a grey moustache and goatee, wearing a black bicorne-style hat and a dark tunic with a white collar. The handle of the Sancho Pança jug is modelled in the form of a donkey’s head and a saddle. Both items feature the circular Royal Doulton backstamp with a lion and crown on the base. The Falstaff jug is marked Falstaff, D 6287, COPR 1949, and Doulton & Co Limited, with an incised or painted 10 near the rim. The Sancho Pança jug is marked Sancho Pança (Servant to Don Quixote), D 6456, COPR 1956, and Doulton & Co Limited, alongside registration numbers Rd No 881510, Rd No 35706, Rd No 7561, and Rd No 332/56. A small hand-painted green mark is present on the base of the Sancho Pança jug.
