Description
A collection of six glazed earthenware Toby jugs produced by notable Staffordshire potteries. The group comprises three jugs by Wood & Sons, two by Shorter & Son Ltd, and one by Price Kensington. The figures are designed in the traditional 18th-century style, depicting seated characters in period dress holding mugs of ale, with their tricorn hats forming the rim and spout of each vessel. The collection includes a Shorter & Son Cavalier and a small Yeoman of the Guard figure. Each piece is finished with hand-painted polychrome decoration under a clear lead glaze.
The Wood & Sons jugs each bear the black printed mark TOBY by WOOD & SONS ENGLAND. The largest of these features an incised mark to the base reading L S PHILP T, while the medium-sized jug is incised N° 1 and the third is incised M.
The Shorter & Son Ltd jugs bear the green printed mark GENUINE STAFFORDSHIRE HAND PAINTED SHORTER & SON LTD. ENGLAND. One is incised CAVALIER to the base, and the other is incised SHORTER ENGLAND.
The Price Kensington jug is a small example bearing a green printed wreath mark with PRICE KENSINGTON and MADE IN ENGLAND. It also features the impressed number 3414 to the base.
