Lot 12:
Description
This Victorian mahogany Scotch chest of drawers, also known as a Highlander chest, dates from the mid-to-late 19th century. The piece is constructed with mahogany primary surfaces, featuring well-figured flame mahogany veneers to the drawer fronts, most notably on the central deep hat drawer. The secondary wood used for the drawer linings and interior components is pine. The drawers are constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, visible on the drawer sides. The drawer configuration consists of a central deep drawer flanked by two pairs of short drawers in the upper section, positioned above three long, graduated drawers. The chest is supported by a shaped apron with integral bracket feet. The drawers are fitted with turned wooden knobs, possibly ebonised or in a dark hardwood, and simple brass escutcheons. One key is present for the top drawer locks.
