An Irish truncheon or life preserver from the Victorian period, hand-carved from a single piece of dark bog oak. The central body features relief decoration of traditional shamrock motifs and foliate scrolls set against a textured, stippled ground. The handle section is decorated with a diamond-hatched diaper pattern and is pierced through the end with a hole containing a textile wrist cord. The piece tapers slightly toward the head, which continues the foliate carved theme.
