Two large Royal Doulton earthenware character jugs. The first jug, titled Falstaff, depicts the Shakespearean character Sir John Falstaff. The piece is hand-painted in polychrome glazes, featuring a grey beard, ruddy complexion, and a black hat over a red hood. The base bears a green Royal Doulton factory mark with a lion standing atop a crown and a circular logo with the letter D in the centre. Below this is the inscription Falstaff, the model number D 6287, copyright COPR 1949, and manufacturer name DOULTON & CO LIMITED. The second jug, titled Sancho Panca, represents the squire from Cervantes’ Don Quixote. It features a grey moustache, a black hat, and a dark coat with a light blue sash. The handle is moulded in the form of a small figure. The base bears a green Royal Doulton factory mark and is inscribed Sancho Panca, (Servant to Don Quixote), the model number D 6456, copyright COPR 1956, and DOULTON & CO LIMITED. The base also includes four registration numbers: RD NO 881510, RD NO 33708, RD NO 7501, and RD NO 332/56.
