Lot 381 A Japanese Lacquered Arita Porcelain Vase, Hichozan Shinpo-zo, Meiji Period

A Japanese lacquered porcelain vase from the Arita region, dating to the Meiji period (1868-1912). The vessel features a widely flared rim, a long tapering neck, and a bulbous body resting on a flared pedestal foot. It is constructed from a white porcelain body finished with a matte black lacquered ground. The decoration consists of two large scalloped reserve panels; one depicts a coastal landscape with a gnarled pine tree and mountains, while the other shows birds amongst flowering branches. These panels and the neck are further embellished with intricate gold geometric diaper patterns and vertical stripes. The base of the vase bears a hand-painted mark in iron-red characters: 大日本 肥長山 信甫造 (Dai Nippon Hichozan Shinpo-zo), which translates as Great Japan, Hichozan Shinpo Made, a mark associated with the Tashiro family trading firm.
