Description
A rectangular brass gift tin produced for the Princess Mary’s Sailors’ and Soldiers’ Christmas Fund for distribution to members of the British, Colonial, and Indian Armed Forces on active service during the first winter of the Great War. The lid features an embossed central profile portrait of Princess Mary facing left, encircled by a laurel wreath and flanked by two stylized cursive M monograms. The decorative border incorporates various military and naval motifs, including battleships, field guns, and bayonets interspersed with flags. The names of the Allied nations are embossed in circular frames at the corners and centres of the edges: Servia, France, Belgium, Monte Negro, Russia, and Japan. A scroll to the right is inscribed Imperium Britannicum and a panel to the left is marked Christmas 1914. This lot consists of the brass tin only.
