Description
A First World War period brass shell casing for a 2.95lb Quick Firing Mountain Gun, modified into a piece of trench art. The casing features a hand-cut scalloped rim in a crown style. The body is decorated with hand-etched floral motifs depicting a bouquet of tulips emerging from a central vase. The base of the casing bears several stamped and hand-worked marks. Stamped markings include 2.95lb Q.F. indicating the ordnance type, a British military broad arrow over the letters CF signifying Cordite Full charge, and the Roman numeral IV for the Mark IV pattern. Additional stamps include a capital A and a capital L, each within a circle. The base also features hand-stippled numbers 896 above the date 1915. This type of ordnance was notably utilised by British colonial forces, including the West African Frontier Force.
