Lot 249:
Description
A mid-20th century floor-standing smoker’s companion or ashtray. The piece is constructed from cast metal components and a tubular metal stem, secured by a central internal tension rod. The top features a D-shaped cast metal bowl with a bridge-style handle. The underside of the handle is notched to provide rests for cigarettes. The central stem and weighted domed base are finished in dark green paint over a red primer. A decorative fluted chrome-plated collar is positioned at the junction of the stem and the base. This type of stand was commonly used in British domestic and commercial settings, such as public houses, between the 1930s and 1950s. No maker’s marks are present.
